  • Housing

The Haven Housing project in Rushville, a project within the ‘Rural Schools Reimagined’ bundle, will transform a vacant former school building into housing.  The Haven School, originally built in 1892, closed its doors in 1974 as the result of school consolidation and has been vacant since. The City of Rushville, in partnership with the Southern Indiana Housing and Community Development Corporation (SIHCDC), is transforming the historic Haven’s School building into 10 affordable apartments. This adaptive reuse project builds on SIHCDC's prior $10 million investment in downtown Rushville, which has renovated three historic buildings and created 33 housing units. The Haven Housing project, income-based but not age-restricted, will provide workforce housing in a convenient downtown location. READI funds will be utilized to remodel the building from its blighted state into a habitable living environment. Future phases of the project will secure neighboring blighted properties, adding additional housing units to the Haven portfolio and increasing the attractiveness to investors. Construction for the project is anticipated to begin in March 2026 and conclude in September 2027. Financing for the project will be secured by December 2026. The project exemplifies small-town development through impactful infill projects.
